People of Significance

People of significance is where I store links related to some of the famous and not so famous people. The key thing about the people placed on this page is that they will have in some way made important contributions to science, technology, humanity, peace, the planet, life as a whole or any other significant achievement in their lifetime. So, it is unlikely there will be many politicians here!

~~~ The People ~~~
1. Jesus Christ a Jewish Messiah, he created the religion of Christianity, was a teacher, a healer and the performer of many miracles during his brief but full life-time. Born:  5BC ~ There were some significant people associated with Jesus, they are: Mary Magdalene, Peter, Thomas & Philip none of which form part of the New Testament, probably because their texts were written much later, and the other disciples being Andrew, John, James son of Zebedee , Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus , Jude, Simon, Judas. Also see: Disciples Christianity & Twelve Apostles. ~ Some (Peter) thought that Jesus may not have been human because he did not display any reactions to pain, whilst others considered him to be both human and divine. Another significant figure of the time was John the Baptist. Other significant history: Ebionites, Docetism, Marcion of Sinope, Christian Heresy, Protestantism, Gnosticism.  ~ After all is said and done and whatever the truth may be about the life of Jesus, one thing is certain, not only was he a highly significant religious figure but he has also affected millions, if not billions, of people’s lives for over 2 thousand years ~ and there is no mistaking that! Whether you believe in him or not makes little difference, because he is inextricably part of everyone’s lives in some way or another to varying degrees, even though we may not all be conscious of this all the time. ~ Whatever you may think, he was, and still is, a truly towering and charismatic figure who was full of goodness to us all on this Earth.
2. Nikola Tesla was an inventor and a mechanical/electrical engineer and is possibly one of the least mentioned or less well known figures of the science world. However, he should not be forgotten as his achievements were not only well ahead of their time but also go on affecting and influencing all of our lives today and will continue to do so in the future. ~ Also see: Nikola Tesla Free Energy For All & www.teslasociety.com & www.spaceandmotion.com & http://inventors.about.com (Nikola_Tesla) & http://www.tfcbooks.com & http://waterpoweredcar.com/teslascar.html & http://www.unmuseum.org/tesla.htm & http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/dept/Courses/E-24/e24.html & http://www.reformation.org/nikola-tesla.html.
3. Albert Einstein a German Physicist, he developed the ‘Theories of Relativity’ and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his work on the Photoelectric Effect. Biography. Born: 14 March 1879.
4. Dmitri Mendeleev (also Dmitrii Mendeleyev) a Russian Chemist, he created the first valid periodic table of the elements in 1869. Born: 7 February 1834.
5. Galileo Galilei an Italian Scientist, he invented the first high-powered astronomical telescope and was denounced by the Roman church for stating that the planets revolved around the Sun. Born: 15 February 1564.
6. Sir Isaac Newton English Physicist & Mathematician, best known for his discovery of gravitation amongst many other things. Born: 4 January 1643.
7. Marie Sklodowska Curie a Polish Physicist and Chemist, she discovered two new elements Polonium and Radium and jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre for their research in the Radiation phenomena discovered by Henri Becquerel, who was also collectively awarded part of the same Nobel Prize. She was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize and, remarkably, 8 years later went on to be awarded a second in Chemistry, making her the first person to win two. She eventually became a French citizen. Born: 7 November 1867.
8. Freeman Dyson a British Maths & Physics Expert. Famed for his contribution to Quantum Dynamics and nuclear engineering he worked on Nuclear Pulse Propulsion within the Orion Project from 1957 to 1961. Also see: http://www.sns.ias.edu/~dyson. Born: 15 December 1923.
9. Robert Oppenheimer a United States Physicist, director of Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory N.M. during which period the first Atomic Bomb was developed. Sometimes known as the ‘father of the Atomic Bomb!’  Born: 22 April 1904.
10. Ted Taylor (& Theodore B Taylor ) ~ Nuclear Physicist, designer of atomic weapons at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and later building nuclear reactors at General Atomics and director of Project Orion the nuclear spacecraft. Also see: www.sondra.net/concerns/ttspeech.htm & www.wagingpeace.org & www.pugwash.org(taylor). Born: 11 July 1925.
11. Tim Berners-Lee (Sir) is a British Physicist and the creator of the software, or protocol (HTTP), that enabled the creation of the World Wide Web and development of what we all now colloquially call the ‘Internet‘ or ‘Web‘ that allows all the global connection of countless computers and servers via our telephone lines which forms a ‘Global Internet’ or ‘WWW’, rather than a closed Intranet system. He will probably go down in history as one of the most significant people to have graced our shores, having created a small piece of software that literally changes the World for ever! ~ Born June 8, 1955, London, England.
12. Linus Torvalds & Linux Creator (www.reed.edu) & Linux
13. John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) was a 15th century Italian navigator who, arguably, discovered the Continent(s) of America for the English crown and not the more famous Christopher Columbus! Who knows? See: http://www.reformation.org/cabotia.html.
14. Alfred Nobel is famous for being the establishment of a foundation to award annual prizes for achievement in chemistry, physics, literature and efforts toward international peace. But his main achievement was being the inventor of Dynamite in 1866.
15. Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand born physicist who established that radioactive elements change into other elements by emitting radiation and discovered the proton, who became known as the father of nuclear physics.
16. Max Planck was a German physicist who provided the watershed between classical and modern physics. He first used the term “Quanta” in 1900 to describe energy that is emitted and absorbed in discreet packets with a definite size, he was most famed for providing a mathematical solution to explain the nature of black-body radiation known as Planck’s Constant.  Planck won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1918, and, together with Einstein’s theory of relativity, his ‘Quantum Theory‘ changed the field of physics. He is known as: “The Father of Quantum Physics“.
17. Niels Bohr born in Denmark, he was a physicist influenced by Rutherford and the key scientific figure in the development of the theories of Quantum Mechanics. His investigations of the atomic structure earned him the 1922 Nobel Prize for physics. He became the first to apply the quantum theory to atomic and molecular structure, and his concept of the atomic nucleus was a key step in understanding such processes as nuclear fission.  Along with Robert Oppenheimer and others, he participated in the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico where he was instrumental in the development of the atomic bomb during WWII. Element 107, bohrium, is named in his honour. He established the Institute for Theoretical Physics which is based in Denmark.
17. Paul Dirac was born in Bristol in 1902 and studied Electrical Engineering and Mathematics before going on to study Particle Physics. He is most famous for unifying conventional physics with quantum physics known as the Dirac Equation which brought together Albert Einstein’s ‘Theory of Relativity’ with ‘Quantum Physics’. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933 with Erwin Schrödinger and went on to become the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a chair once occupied by SIr Isaac Newton.
